Treasure hunter Buffy Winship Baily from the UK made the find of her life today. Out detecting with her Equinox 800, she managed to dig up a solid gold medieval miniature bible. It hasn’t been examined or dated as yet, however, indications are that it may date from the 13-15th century.
“it has been suggested it is a medieval iconographic decorated Bible dangler (bookmark) from a Bible spine or cover, possibly dating to around 13-15th century” she said
Bookmarks were used throughout the medieval period. They usually consisted of a small parchment strip attached to the edge of the book. Other times it was a piece of cord attached to the headband, often adorned with beads etc on the end. Buffy’s stunning find shows a hole running through the spine of the book. This was presumably to attach to the bookmark cord. The chances are, this was the weighted bookmark from an ancient bible.
Either way, her find has set the treasure hunting and archaeological world on fire.
