THE HUMBLE 50 CENTS CAN BE WORTH A WHOLE LOT MORE, FOR THE RIGHT ONES.
In 2010 the Australian Mint accidentally minted approximately 200,000 fifty cent coins incorrectly, referred to as “Upset” which are quite valuable now. The term “Upset” means that the designs on the front and back were not aligned correctly when the coins were minted.
Usually, both sides are minted with both sides aligned, however, in the case of these “upset” coins, one side is out of alignment by 30 degrees or one side of the 12 sided (dodecagonal) design as shown in the picture.
No one knows the cause of the error, however, it is suspected that the die was mounted incorrectly into the press during a standard run of 200,000 coins. This would explain the small number of affected coins.
So, the next time you get a 50 cent coin in your change. Or, you dig one up on a hunt, take a good look at it as it may be worth a whole lot more.
